ABOUT INFORMATICS
The Informatics department serves the critical role of defining and leading technological innovation across our system to support the highest quality of care and enhance our teams’ use of the technology. We support over 28,000 users across the spectrum of ambulatory to inpatient care throughout the State of Maryland. Our diverse team of clinical and business professionals, educators, communication experts and information technology professionals provide UMMS end users with an avenue to influence the design, development, deployment and optimization of the enterprise Electronic Health Record (EHR). We specialize in training, product development, problem solving and end user support. Our team has well established relationships with the 16 UMMS facilities and the hundreds of ambulatory locations. We provide a key connection between our IS&T technical colleagues and our end user community.
WHAT WE DO
As the central nervous system connecting our end users to our information technology systems our typical work day changes constantly creating an exciting environment for those who like new challenges intermingled with routine work. Our teams are structured in a service line model which allows members to become experts in their chosen area as well as generalists in other areas to provide the most holistic approach possible. Current projects include large implementations of our primary EHR, new ambulatory office openings, system upgrades, new mobile technologies, and EHR enhancements. Using a strong collaborative approach, our role in these projects includes informatics to guide workflow analysis and system design, curriculum and training development and delivery, communications and support both at Go Live and beyond.
HEAR FROM OUR TEAM MEMBERS
“I started as a clinical nurse at Shock Trauma, first at the bedside, then in the OR. When we moved from paper to electronic documentation, I was asked to be on the project team to represent the OR. From that experience, I moved into an informatics position at UMMC and pursued a Master’s in Informatics. I then joined the IT team at UCH and from there to UMMS IS&T. “
“My first interview with my director was very positive. We discussed career growth into a new area of knowledge in the field of quality payment programs. This opportunity would allow me to have accountability within my new area of expertise and to help implement important changes in the measurement of the quality of patient care which is a core value in my career.”
“When I share that I am a nurse and that I work in Clinical Informatics, I am usually met with a puzzled look. It is a relatively new career path within nursing and it is not the “typical” nursing job. However that is the beauty in nursing, there are so many different avenues that can be taken that will truly develop a wide range of professional skills.”
“When you collaborate with your team on a project that will have positive impacts on patients as well as the end-users and you finally see the positive results, that is an amazing feeling to know that you had a part in such a project.”
