Pulmonary Function Testing Tech

PRN Day

An excellent opportunity exists for a recent college graduate to become a credential health care professional in the field of Pulmonary Function Testing. Our six-month training program requires 62 credits hours of college credit from an accredited college or university in the area of biology, chemistry and mathematics. General Summary

The Certified Pulmonary Function Testing Technician is responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients requiring diagnostic testing in an organized and systematic manner according to department policy and standards.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification.  These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Performs pulmonary-function, lung-capacity, diffusion capacity, and blood-and-oxygen tests to gather data for use by physician in diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary disorders
  • Confers with patient in treatment room to explain test procedures
  • Explains specified methods of breathing to patient and conducts pulmonary-function tests, such as helium dilution and pulmonary mechanics (flow of air rate in lungs), arterial blood gas analyses, and lung-capacity tests, such as vital capacity and maximum breathing capacity tests, using spirometer or other equipment
  • Measures expired air, using various analyzers
  • Observes and records readings on metering devices of analysis equipment, and conveys findings of tests and analyses to physician for interpretation
  • Maintains patient charts and ensures information is filed/scanned accurately
  • Maintains clinical equipment and notifies management of issues or concerns
  • Operates equipment in a safe and competent manner
  • Restocks and prepares lab for the next day according to par levels. Notifies manager responsible for ordering supplies when appropriate
  • Functions as a collaborative team member; demonstrated commitment to group goals and teamwork

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Certified or Registered Pulmonary Function Technician credentialed or Certified/Registered Respiratory Therapist with Maryland state licensure (Required)
  • High School Diploma or GED (Required)
  • BLS Certification (Required)
  • One (1) year of Pulmonary Function Tech or Respiratory Therapy experience (Required)
  • Vocational / Technical Degree or Associate’s (Preferred)
