General Summary
Under the supervision of Pharmacists, assists in the formulation, preparation, dispensing, and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical supplies.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
1. Functions as a collaborative team member/demonstrates commitment to group goals and teamwork as it pertains to Pharmacy discipline.
2. Participates as support in the Care Team using skills/qualifications of the Pharmacy Technician.
3. Receives and reviews medication requests to be processed in a timely manner.
4. Assesses departmental needs and performs duties considering staffing.
5. Enters medication orders into the computer, fills medication orders and gives to pharmacists for review and verification.
6. Files physician orders, once computer order entry process is complete, as well as processing of transfers and discharges.
7. Types medication and pharmaceutical labels for non-unit does medications.
8. Fills reports from Pyxis, loading and unloading, as necessary.
9. Answers telephone to receive, record and/or provide information within scope of authority; refers appropriate requests/questions to pharmacist.
10. Accurately fills and exchanges Sub-Acute Unit carts.
11. Evaluates stock levels and performs to standard restocking to include IV room; advises Inventory Control Technician of low stock levels.
12. Adheres to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures/objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control.
13. Prepares outpatient prescriptions by typing labels, calculate costs, pull appropriate amount of medications, and give to pharmacist for review and verifications.
14. Processes requests for floor stock medications, departmental orders and charges for same.
15. Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, reconstitutes, performs necessary calculations, labels and prepares injectable medications and IV admixtures for distribution (including TPN’s and Chemotherapy).
16. Maintains the Pharmacy and IV Room in a clean and orderly manner.
17. Cleans equipment used in performance of duties. Assist in the care and maintenance of department, departmental equipment and supplies.
18. Plays an active role in training of new employees, students, and volunteers.
19. Utilizes appropriate customer relations skills when interaction with patients, families, visitors, hospital staff, etc. to ensure all customers are treated with respect and dignity.
20. Ensures the confidentiality and respects the rights of patients and employees and the confidentiality of all hospital and departmental documents.
21. Evaluates the hospital’s needs for medications and reports Pharmacy’s stock levels to the Pharmacy Purchasing Specialist
22. Demonstrates effective verbal communication skills in the following areas:
a. Appropriate phone/intercom manners.
b. Concise Report to Director when appropriate.
c. Polite requests for assistance.
d. Keeping excessive “chatter” at a minimum in Patient Care Areas and Pharmacy.
Education and Experience
1. High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
2. Completion of technician training program preferred.
3. Certified pharmacy technician preferred.
4. Registered as Registered Pharmacy Technician with State of Maryland within six months of date of hire or transfer into the position.
5. One – two years working experience as a pharmacy technician in an institutional setting preferred.

14. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, workshops, in-service meetings, etc.
15. Maintains established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, and quality assurance program, safety environmental and infection control.
16. Assumes the role of Pharmacy Inventory Control technician/Pharmacy Pyxis technician, as needed.
