Job Description

Under minimal administrative direction, the Senior Clinical Informaticist is accountable for the delivery of value-added health care informatics and technology, to lead, educate, and advise users and application developers for the appropriate use and delivery of clinical applications and third-party systems for a multi-hospital system with a flagship Academic Medical Center. Coordinates and provides support in evaluation, integration, and training related to implementation and operational health informatics needs for safe effective inpatient environment. To achieve this objective, the Senior Clinical Informaticist, in collaboration with the Informatics manager, directs communication and coordination of clinical/operational service line and Medical System hospital participation to meet organizational objectives.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks: 

 

  1. Leads and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to assess, design, and improve our EHR with particular focus on laboratory informatics systems and solutions to include instrument manager software and related server technology.
  2. Anticipates and identifies complex clinical and business processes and informatics issues, monitors and measures the risk factors.  Communicates risk factors to informatics leadership and stakeholders. 
  3. Leads projects to ensure the implementation of continuous quality control of process and deliverables.
  4. Builds, enhances, and maintains effective networks with other IST team members, across the Medical System, including internal and external subject matter experts.
  5. Engages with stakeholders across the Medical System to review solutions, issues and to gain commitment on recommendations.
  6. Influences system level leadership to champion organization changes from inception to culmination.
  7. Actively addresses barriers to change; adapts to and manages ambiguity/complexity.
  8. Visibly involved in obtaining customer feedback, incorporating customer requirements into service design and advocating for technical solutions to clinical and business processes.
  9. Provides support and coaches stakeholders in effective process analysis and improvement techniques and in using data to assess and improve unit performance.
  10. Leads with minimal direction multiple aspects of electronic health record development and implementation. Partners in training development and delivery, go-live and elbow support, testing activities, reporting, business and clinical needs prioritization for the electronic health record.
  11. Effectively uses, applies, and communicates data and information from multiple sources which effect Medical System programs. These data sources include financial reports, clinical and service quality data, human resource data and information from the external market. 
  12. Effectively facilitates changes in key indicators and directs key stakeholders in applying information to changes at the hospital and service line level.
  13. Leads and/or facilitates key stakeholder discussion and response to issues, which impact clinical practice, care delivery, and business and revenue cycle.
  14. Leads innovation in healthcare practice, care delivery systems, and healthcare business operations by staying current with emerging trends and literature in healthcare informatics and care delivery.  Disseminates and incorporates research findings into informatics and EHR efforts. 
  15. Actively communicates and facilitates organizational goals and objectives to Medical System stakeholders.  Identifies implications of external environment for the organization and service lines. 
  16. Master EHR application and organizational workflows.
  17. Leads team meetings and other assigned meetings as needed.   Ensures projects, assignments, and goals within desired timeframes.
  18. In collaboration with informatics manager, provides knowledge and mentorship to peers and team members.

While accountable for the quality of informatics services delivered, the Senior Clinical Informaticist is a change leader and serves as a positive, progressive, professional role model. This role independently coordinates and collaborates with IS&T application teams, Informatics Training, and clinical and business leadership and frontline users, coordinate across system hospitals and contributes to the design and maintenance of systems to support multidisciplinary team functioning and continuity of services within the Medical System. The Senior Clinical Informaticist also manages projects for clinical or business applications in the healthcare environment.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing, business, information technology, health care administration, or other clinical specialty or comparable applicable industry experience required. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five (5) years of clinical or direct health service industry experience required, within the past ten (10) years
  • Minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in leading enterprise or highly complex initiatives is required.
  • Six (6) months experience within University of Maryland Medical System.
  • Where applicable for Clinical Roles, clinical licensure in the State of Maryland, or eligibility for licensure due to Compact state agreements is required.
  • Implementation experience with electronic health record and/or previous experience in an enterprise wide system implementation is preferred.
  • Informatics or Relevant Industry Certification strongly recommended.
  • Where applicable, achieves and maintains relevant Epic or EHR application certification
