Job Description

  • Join a multifaceted team that covers Trauma and general surgery under ACES (Acute Care and Emergency Services) that, in collaboration with the attending on call, is responsible for the comprehensive care, and medical management of the trauma and general surgery patient from arrival, admission, transfer, and discharge.
    • Advanced Practice Practitioner (APP) will be trained to cover all aspects of the ACES team.
    • Cover other subspecialties as needed.
    • The APP will have the opportunity to cross cover other APP lead service lines.
  • As a full-time position, this APP will be responsible for three 25-hour shifts per two-week pay period.
  • The APP will perform routine and expanded job descriptions as listed in the provider’s Delineation of Privileges on file with our Medical Staff Office and compliant with the Maryland Board of Physicians or Maryland Board of Nursing regulations.
  • In collaboration with the attending physician on call, the APP will:
    • Demonstrate competence and skill in required tasks and procedures.
    • Obtain medical histories, examines patients, rounds daily, orders and interprets tests, makes initial diagnoses, and orders treatments. 
    • Demonstrate knowledge of and competency in required the management of basic medical and post-op surgical problems, i.e., SOB, fever.
    • Demonstrate competence and skill while performing in the operating room/emergency room.
    • Provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health care services to critically ill patients.
    • Communicate effectively with attending physicians, other medical teams, team members, and patients and their families.
    • Instruct and counsel patients and families.
    • Maintain a list of in-house patients and makes rounds daily.
    • Write progress notes with appropriate updates regarding results of studies, notations regarding procedures and/or surgery, and outline of therapeutic plan
    • Administer therapeutic procedures such as suturing, chest tube placement, central and peripheral line placement, and wound care.
    • First assist in the operating room.
  • Maintain required continuing education requirements
    • Completes at least 50 hours of Category I CME every two years. Complete 32 hours of trauma related CME.
    • Performs according to Maryland Board of Physician or Board of Nursing standards and expanded job description procedural protocols.
  • Facilitate excellence in quality assurance and the delivery of patient care as part of our High Reliability Organization.
    • Provides optimal quality of patient care while following safety guidelines,
    • Maintains a procedure complication rate less than the national average.
    • Contributes to cohesive group relations; uses open communication to resolve problems in and between departments.
    • Demonstrates commitment to professional department and organizational core values.
  • Participates in APP Council meetings, ACES team meetings, APP and ACES team educational opportunities, and other learning opportunities as they arise.
  • Engages in leadership activities including but not limited to APP representation on committees, training and education of other APPs, or specific event or team.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • Bachelor’s degree and graduation from an ARC-PA accredited Physician Assistant program are required, along with mandatory certification by the NCCPA and registration with the Maryland State Board of Medical Examiners, OR current certification to practice as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
    • One year of surgical, emergency, or critical care experience is preferred.
    • Must participate in appropriate continuing medical education programs.
    • Credentialing must be obtained from University of Maryland Capital Region Health’s Medical Staff Office
    • Maintenance of BLS and ACLS certification is required.
    • ATLS is required and can be obtained after your start date.
    • Salary is commensurate with clinical experience.
