University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center houses a 10-bed secure pediatric unit for children with illness and injuries. The unit features specialized care by a team of pediatric hospitalists and experienced pediatric certified nurses who are dedicated to making the hospitalization process as positive and stress-free as possible for patients and their parents. Through a two-way partnership between UM BWMC's pediatric hospitalists and the patient's pediatrician, patients receive treatment based on their personal medical history and have access to the latest technological advancements.

On the pediatric unit, children have access to a colorful playroom filled with books, puzzles, video games and toys. Parents are provided with one-on-one teaching regarding their child's care after discharge. For the comfort of both the child and the parent, two parents are allowed to spend the night with their child and liberal visiting hours are granted to family members.

Under limited supervision, the Registered Nurse is responsible for the assessment of patients including the development, evaluation and modification of the plan of care. The RN interprets and performs complex patient-care procedures specific to their area of expertise. RN’s are members of the Care Team and Support Team and have accountability to function as a team to accomplish patient outcomes identified in the pathway/plan of care.
