Radiographer Opportunity - UM Rehab & Ortho Imaging Department
  • This position performs a variety of routine and specialized diagnostic, fluoroscopic and CT (experience preferred - not required) procedures applying prescribed ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis. 
  • Performs image analysis and quality assurrance by reviewing images for diagnostic quality prior to submission for interpretation by a radiologist.     

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  1. Electronic/Paper documentation- Accurately and concisely records patient care along the continuum. Attends required training on electronic documentation. Demonstrates ability to document/enter data correctly in the medical record/EMR verified by chart review.
  2. Contrast Administration:  Administers oral and I.V. contrast through peripheral I.V., Power Picc lines, and approved ports according to department and hospital protocol. Administers gastrografin through PEG tube for the confirmation of PEG tube placement according to department protocol. Completes annual competency and skill check list - kept on file.
  3. CT Competency:  Demonstrates knowledge and technical skills required for the performance of non-contrast and contrast CT studies. Demonstrates ability to operate the CT scanner and contrast injector. Reviews patient's allergy history prior to IV contrast procedures. Confirms the presence of physician order, informed consent and BUN/ creatinine lab values within range and  past seven days. Completes annual competency and skill list- kept on file.
  4. Abuse and neglect: Identifies behaviors, objective findings and circumstances that trigger activation of the hospital Abuse and Neglect policy in the radiology setting.

  6. Leadership, Clinical and/or Technical Skills:Exhibits a high level of critical thinking and clinical competency related to the patient population in the area of assignment.
  7. Demonstrates diligence in the operation of radiographic, fluoroscopic, and computed tomography (CT) equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures. 
  8. Positions patients with a high degree of skill according to department protocol.  Provides radiation protection in accordance with regulations. Critiques images for quality and accuracy, and forwards images to radiologist for interpretation. Identifies anatomical sides accurately by utilizing lead markers.  Recognizes and responds to emergency situations by utilizing CPR and/or contacting appropriate medical personnel.
  9. Assists physicians, licensed practitioners, and speech therapists with specialized procedures, i.e. modified barium swallow studies, joint injections/aspirations, pain management studies, and other procedures by handling equipment, preparing instruments. Assists physicians with administration of contrast materials by prepping and explaining procedures to patients. Prepares and maintains a sterile field by utilizing sterile technique.  Assists physician in obtaining consent for special procedures requiring consent.
  10. Communicates effectively with patients, physicians, and other hospital staff. Communicates information regarding patient preparation and scheduling. Advises physicians on appropriate radiographic procedures for visualization of the particular body part.
  11. Performs routine office and film library duties as assigned: Answers telephones, assists or directs callers, schedules patients for radiology procedures, performs records retrieval and filing.  Completes documentation accurately, including number of films, exposures, date and time of study, and correct charge for patient exams.  Responds to calls for portable radiology services by answering request within 15 minutes.

What You Need to Be Successful:

  • Licensed by the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as a Medical Radiation Technologist. 
  • CPR certification is required. 
  • Graduation from an AMA approved school of radiologic technology.  Registered or registry-eligible by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
  • Experience in CT Preferred
