What You Will Do:

General Summary
Under close supervision, perform maintenance and repair of electronic patient care/monitoring and clinical engineering equipment of routine complexity including routine maintenance, safety testing, minor calibration, and minor repair.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
  • Performs preventive maintenance, service, and calibration/repair of electronic patient care and clinical laboratory research equipment of routine complexity such as aspirators, hypo/hypothermia units, infusion devices, laboratory instrumentation, and low risk therapeutic/diagnostic/patient care equipment in accordance with departmental standards and manufacturer's operating and repair manuals.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance and electrical safety testing as directed by lead technician or supervisor.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the use of electronic/biomedical test equipment such as volt/ohm/ammeters, capacitance meters, power supplies, electrical safety analyzers, and vacuum/pressure gauges/meters.
  • Interprets and performs inspection procedures appropriately and documents procedures properly in accordance with The Joint Commission regulations and departmental policy and procedure.
  • Performs regular manual and software tests, including electrical safety testing, of clinical engineering equipment for accuracy and efficiency of operation.
  • Identifies potential safety hazards of equipment, regularly, and documents actions taken to eliminate them;  Replaces defective components of any of the aforementioned equipment, such as, power cords/plugs, fuses, knobs/hardware, batteries, motors, brushes, and incandescent indicators/lamps, as needed, if determined to be irreparable; Refers complex repairs to Senior BMET/supervisor for assessment and assignment to appropriate staff.
  • Assists BMET II/Senior BMET in responding to work requests, daily, and with troubleshooting malfunctions and effecting repair in a timely and efficient manner to reduce the amount of down-time and to keep the department operating effectively.
  • Assists BMET II/Senior BMET in installation, repair and maintenance of complex clinical research equipment and the electronic and mechanic components thereof.
  • Schedules third party repair of equipment when needs are beyond the scope of internal Clinical Engineering department's abilities, as needed.
  • Technicians assigned to the central Clinical Engineering department:  labels equipment with operational status and date preventive maintenance was performed.  Enters status data into the computer system as required.
  • Submits documentation of completed inspection, preventive maintenance and service reports to supervisor for quality control purposes.
  • Maintains test equipment and tools in good working order.
  • Communicates with nursing, allied health and medical staff, regularly, regarding equipment availability to facilitate equipment inspection/service scheduling.
  • Contacts internal Patient Support Services or external vendors to arrange for repair of or order parts for equipment, as necessary.
  • May participate in evaluation of new, rental or demonstration clinical equipment to gain insight into equipment operation, clinical application and appropriate use.
  • Observes clinical engineering practices and respective departmental policies and procedures to promote the overall efficiency of repair service and operations for Clinical Engineering or the respective unit.
  • Assists with maintenance of departmental records such as maintenance requests, electrical safety forms, files, relevant statistics and technical manuals on clinical equipment in accordance with The Joint Commission, Federal, State and local regulations.
  • Assist the Senior Biomedical Engineering Technicians or the supervisor when requested with conducting in-service educational programs on use and operation of relevant clinical equipment.


What You Need to Be Successful:

Education and Experience

  • Certificate in Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, or commensurate combination of education and experience, is required. 
  • Associate’s degree in Biomedical Engineering Technology or Electronics Technology is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Basic knowledge of the principles and practices of electronics or biomedical engineering Technology as applied to the calibration and repair of biomedical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of electronic component characteristics in relation to configuration in AC/DC circuits.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of color code conventions used in component and wiring marking.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital electronics concepts, Boolean algebra and logical truth tables.
  • Basic knowledge of and ability to effectively use electronic and pneumatic measuring devices.  Demonstrated ability to properly operate volt/OHM/ammeter, oscilloscope, DC power supply, electrical safety analyzer, and pressure/vacuum meter/gauge.  Proficiency in the use of tools and soldering/desoldering equipment
  • Familiarity with basic anatomy and physiology as applied to the use and operation of biomedical equipment.
  • Effective verbal communication skills are required to work with management and clinical staff, external vendors and to work with the biomedical staff. Effective writing skills are necessary to write deficiency reports on equipment. Ability to read and comprehend technical equipment operation and service manuals.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical/electronic circuit schematics properly;
  • Ability to recognize electronic components and their symbols as used in schematic diagrams;
  • Ability to a use computer to perform data entry of statistical information into the department's computerized database is required for Biomedical Engineering Technicians working in the central Clinical Engineering department.
