What You Will Do:

General Summary
Under general supervision assists in leading performance innovation value stream and associated transformation projects. Employs performance improvement/transformation methodology, tools and techniques in organization operations in order to accomplish business objectives. Mentors team members on the utilization of lean tools and methodology. Plans key project initiatives and ensures successful completion and sustainment (Kaizen / Rapid Improvement Events – RIEs).

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.                                                          

  • Leads and participates in value streams in conducting performance improvement and process redesign RIE’s using appropriate analytic and facilitation techniques as the situation requires.  
  • Conducts best practice research, process analyses, benchmarking and performance measurement activities, such as baseline and post RIE sustainment metrics.
  • Identifies the process or operational area requiring redesign or improvement and participates in developing project plans, facilitating meetings to accomplish the identified tasks, and documenting project outputs.
  • Improves processes using performance improvement standards and methods, such as 5S, Lean, VSA, Six Sigma, process mapping / re-engineering, and collaborative problem solving techniques.
  • Develops standard work and collects and presents data analysis results.
  • Leads the A3 process and design for rapid improvement events (RIE) and value stream analysis (VSA), including accurately focused Reason for Action, quantitative and qualitative initial and current states, and accurate scope for the team tasked with the RIE.
  • Develops metrics that measure the desired RIE & VSA Outcomes.
  • Measures current organizational and process performance using a variety of qualitative and quantitative techniques including one-on-one user interviews, user workshops, surveys, observational studies, and statistical analysis.
  • Develops process maps of existing and future state processes using appropriate techniques and software (MS Project and Visio).
  • Leads team members and executes project management in achieving the stated value stream analysis (VSA) completion plan and objectives. 
  • Effectively conveys A3 progress and results to working groups and VSA steering committees.
  • Coaches groups and individuals in challenging the status quo.
  • Develops articles or presentations highlighting successful project outcomes.
  • Supports financial performance follow up based on VSA metrics, such as return on investment.
  • Promotes continuous improvement of quality service delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Collaborates with other PI teams and work groups
  • Constantly seeks ways to improve customer and patient satisfaction through observing day-to-day practices, offering ideas, or seeking input from patients and colleagues.
  • Identifies problems and intervenes as appropriate or notifies appropriate personnel for resolution. Applies appropriate performance improvement/ change management methodologies.
  • Works to reduce costs by preventing waste through daily activities and identifying waste reduction opportunities.  
  • Analyzes total cost of ownership (TCO) approach as opposed to short term cost savings or initial purchase prices.
  • Performs simple business analysis and return on investment (ROI).
  • Documents, organizes and maintains records and files containing work plans, analysis tools and results, communications and presentations, sustainment and final deliverables.  
  • Executes work plans (A3’s) for VSA and the associated RIE’s, Projects and just do it’s.
  • Strives to achieve simple and effective processes, procedures, and standards.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory guidelines. 


What You Need to Be Successful:

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree is required. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering is preferred.
  • Four (4) years Lean / process improvement / process redesign experience is preferred.
  • Team leadership and facilitation experience is required.
  • Industrial engineering experience is preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must possess a strong understanding of change management issues and the change cycle dynamics.
  • Strong understanding of patient focused care and needs in perspective with the hospital's C2X pillars and PI goals.
  • Effective and strong team leadership, facilitation and influential management skills are key to this role
  • Demonstrated ability to apply structured continuous improvement/change management methods, particularly within the context of rapid cycle performance improvement (rapid experiments).
  • Successful track record as a change agent who is adept in working continuous improvement issues across multiple departments and organizational cultures
  • Demonstrated ability to meet critical deadlines, managing across organizational teams
  • Ability to influence and coach for results at all organizational levels; ability to constructively engage, negotiate, resolve conflict and influence staff and leaders.
  • Ability to use a broad range of internal/external factors when making decisions; uses information from the SIPOC, community, market and competitors.
  • Ability to present findings and recommendations to senior management and front-line staff.
  • Self-confident and flexible with a positive attitude.
