What You Will Do:

Technical Writer and Web Content Specialist for Training & Informatics Communications

Candidates should have a technical writing background and be able to provide writing samples. Epic EMR or healthcare/clinical content is ideal. Must be tech savvy, able to produce and update web content on the UMMS Intranet.

General Summary

The position is responsible for developing writing strategy by identifying systems and processes aspects that need documentation, establishing priorities and schedules. These include all phases of projects, release and implementations.  Plan, organize, and write high quality end-user documentation such as online help, user guides, instructions for use manuals, white papers, design specifications, system manuals, etc.; prepare documentation by converting technical descriptions into audience appropriate language; enforce the organization and consistency of the departments documentation to conform to the guidelines created; define requirements and usage guidelines for a document repository tool; improve documentation by evaluating internal process tools and interviewing technical and business users; implement continuous improvement opportunities within the documentation as part of each process or procedure; as well as design and develop technical documentation using established standards.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

  • Write, edit and produce web content on Intranet using web content system and basic HTML.
  • Partner with marketing department and clinical professionals to produce content for Intranet, newsletters, video production, etc. 
  • Analyzes the needs of the target audience. 
  • Studies and understands requirement documents, design documents, and other technical documentation produced by other departments. 
  • Conducts in-depth interviews with subject matter experts to fully understand the product or procedure. 
  • Produces clear, concise end-user publications in a timely manner 
  • Produces or arranges for illustrations, charts, and screen shots to be included in publications. 
  • Edits, standardizes, or revises material prepared by other writers or personnel. 
  • Prepares layout of material for publication. 
  • Prepares rough drafts of the publication for review with the feature team, manager, team lead, and/or customers. 
  • Serves as a member of a feature team during the software development release cycle 

What You Need to Be Successful:

Education and Experience

  • Associates Degree required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • One (1) year of experience working on technical projects and interacting with technical concepts required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • The position requires excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Highly organized, deadline oriented, quality focused.
  • Advanced skills in MS Office; Visio, Adobe Acrobat.
  • A solid understanding of usability principles in the development of software.
  • Knowledge of HTML and/or content management software.
