What You Will Do:

The Senior Vice President/Chief Financial Officer (CFO) 
provides leadership and is responsible for the direction and administration of the financial operations of University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health, including development, interpretation, coordination, and administration of the organization's policies on finance, accounting, materials management, information systems and technology, internal controls and auditing.  Responsible for the maintenance of records and procedures required to adequately safeguard the assets of the hospitals.  The CFO participates as a member of the senior leadership team and serves as Chief Financial advisor to the President/Chief Executive Officer (CEO).  Develops financial alternatives/strategies, provides oversight on all business plans and transactions, following trends to provide guidance in financial issue problem solving with the Board, Medical Staff and Administration.  The CFO participates in strategic planning and operational planning, in alignment with the organization's objectives and financial business plan.  Serves as the senior executive in the absence of the President and CEO of UM UCH.

Because of the key role with regard to effective stewardship of financial resources, the CFO operates within the existing delegations, policies and procedures in effect within the hospitals, with emphasis on accurate disclosure of all transactions, and the nature or risks associated with all such transactions, informing the CEO, the Finance Committee and the Board with accuracy in all matters of business risk; and operating within defined authority at all times and assuring the financial and departmental operations under his/her control and supervision also operate with the hospitals' policies and procedures.

What You Need to Be Successful:

  • Bachelor's degree majoring in accounting/finance AND Master's degree in Healthcare Financial Management OR Master's Degree in Business Administration with a focus on healthcare required.  
  • Fellow of the Healthcare Financial Management Association preferred.
  • Minimum ten (10) years of accounting and finance experience in supervisory/leadership positions.  
  • At least three (3) years of experience should be directly in the healthcare field or in the public accounting field performing audits for a healthcare organization or intermediary.
Skills & Abilities:
  • Must be able to plan, manage, and establish an esprit de corps in his/her area of responsibility.  
  • Must also possess the technical and professional accounting skills, be able to develop financial and other operational systems to accurately control the organization's activities, and understand and make decisions about computer hardware and software capabilities.  
  • Must possess strong financial and leadership skills, with a focus on strategy and innovation.  
  • Must also be able to interpret and explain financial statements and other financial/reimbursement matters to management and the board of trustees.  
  • Must demonstrate analytical and problem solving skills, as well as the ability to work and communicate effectively with all levels of leadership both within and outside the areas of his/her responsibility.
