What You Will Do:

The University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking a CytoHisto Lab Tech (Days: 7:30am-4:00pm) in the Histopathology Laboratory with a desire to join our world-class team. 

The CytoHisto Lab Tech under direct technical supervision, retrieve and accession cytopathology and surgical pathology specimens.  Prepare samples of human body cells and tissue for evaluation by Cytotechnologists and Pathologists to detect cancer and other pathological conditions, following established departmental procedures and practices and regulation stipulated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act.
  • Retrieves surgical pathology and cytology specimens from the operating rooms and clinics and evaluates adequacy of specimens. 
  • Accessions cytopathology and surgical pathology patient, specimen and test request information in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Checks accuracy of specimen labeling, identifying and initiating steps to resolve errors in specimen labeling and/or patient identification.  Refers unresolved problems to Pathologists’ Assistants or Technical Specialist, Cytology.
  • Accurately enters specimen processing information into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Assists with labeling of slides; files and retrieves cytopathology and surgical pathology slides.
  • Cleans and sterilizes all equipment and apparatus used in the performance of specimen preparation, as appropriate.
  • Answers telephones and responds to customer inquiries and requests.
  • Attends in-service training programs and other relevant training both internal and external for professional growth and development.
  • Performs related duties as required.

What You Need to Be Successful:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent required.
  2. One (1) year practical laboratory experience preferred.
  3. One (1) year of customer service experience preferred.
  4. Recommended within 6 months from date of hire or transfer into position, to complete a Medical Terminology course.
