What You Will Do:

The University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking a Medical Lab Scientist II (MLS II) in the Laboratories of Pathology HLA/ Immunogenetics!
 

About the HLA/Immunogenetics Lab: 

The University of Maryland Medical Center’s (UMMC) Division of Transplantation has a reputation for compassionate care, innovative techniques and surgical excellence.  The UMMC HLA / Immunogenetics Laboratory is the provider of histocompatibility testing for UMMC kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung and stem cell transplant programs.  As one of the busiest transplant centers in the country, and the largest program in Maryland, our team of transplant surgeons perform more than 450 solid organ transplants each year.  

The MLS II will contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, and care of patients by the accurate performance of the laboratory testing procedures on serum, blood and tissue.  The HLA and Immunogenetics Lab works under the umbrella of regulatory compliance to assure an efficient, effective and high quality work process.  The qualified candidate will perform high complexity HLA testing including determination of antibody specificity, DNA-based molecular typing (SSOP and NGS), and flow cytometric crossmatching for the evaluation of solid organ and stem cell transplant patients and their prospective donors.  The MLS II will participate in a rotating on-call schedule to perform urgent deceased donor compatibility testing for the solid organ transplant programs.  


As a Medical Lab Scientist II you will serve as a fully effective and participative member of a multidisciplinary patient care services team. You will be responsible for quality, efficiency and safety in the performance of all laboratory functions to include performing complex analyses on a variety of sample types, maintaining proper records and utilizing independent judgment to generate quality test results. You will also assist with development and modification of procedures within the specified clinical area and take action to correct observed risks to patient safety.

What You Need to Be Successful:

Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to perform your daily tasks efficiently.  The MLS II technologist position requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.  The successful candidate must be able to work in a highly technical, precise environment.  

A Bachelor’s degree and appropriate certification by a nationally recognized program, e.g. ASCP or equivalent is required. 

Two years of relevant clinical laboratory experience in an accredited hospital or reference laboratory setting is also required.
