What You Will Do:

General Summary

Under general guidance and supervision evaluate, design and implement new technology systems for those departments supported by Radiology IT including but not limited to the PACS system, the CT scanner system, the Tera Recon system, etc. Administer assigned file servers, test new software products, integrate new products and new software release upgrades, analyze user needs, resolve user problems, maintain file server integrity and performance, and recommend new products and services for customer support.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
  • Ensures data center activities and corporate systems related to PACS/RIS throughout the medical center. Ensure assigned file servers are maintained at optimum level for performance.  Ensure that file server(s) is operational, connected to network and users can perform normal activities with respect to the LAN.
  • In conjunction with Radiology IT management, act as a Project Manager for future software upgrades, implementations, etc. Oversee and direct the work of technical project personnel.  Oversee and direct the work of research and/or development specialists to ensure the movement of IT concepts from “bench to bed.” 
  • Evaluate, design and implement new technology systems to meet clinical and business objectives related to the department.    
  • Create and design system architectures that support the delivery of mission critical imaging systems at UMMC, and other departments throughout UMMS.
  • Evaluate vendor proposals and work with their engineering teams to implement systems that support industry best practices for availability, uptime and serviceability.
  • Ensure that the UMMS imaging and related clinical systems supported by the Radiology IT department are implemented with an always-on philosophy and subsequent architecture.
  • Design and create a scalable architecture that is capable of accommodating new products and systems to meet the needs of applicable UMMS departments on an ongoing basis.               
  • Ensure that all users problems escalated through the Radiology IT Help Desk environment are resolved completely.
  • Ensure that LAN security is maintained and that backups are run on regular basis.
  • Independently troubleshoots user problem calls to resolve hardware, software and user training issues.
  • Provide technical guidance to customer base in the use of supported software products and load workstation software in accordance with established UMMC standards.
  • Analyze user needs and develop recommendations for submission to department and Network Services Organization.
  • May conduct testing of user software against standard suite of UMMC supported software for department use.
  • Oversees installation and/or independently installs or relocates computer equipment such as PCs, modems, terminals, printers, and other associated hardware at user locations ensuring access to electricity, network and telephone equipment in accordance with established UMMC standards.
  • Assign and maintain records of IP addresses, PC configurations, or other required documentation for assigned LAN(s).
  • Where appropriate, write code utilizing several advanced programming languages and discuss in-depth programming requirements and needs of the applicable system to both vendors and peer IT staff.
  • Act in a leadership role in preparation of continuing educational sessions for departmental PACS Administrators and other UMMS IT staff. Contribute to peer-reviewed journals and speak at national level industry meetings on a regular basis.  

What You Need to Be Successful:

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent work experience required.
  • Six (6) years of system administration experience required. Two (2) years of Linux/Open Source experience required. Experience should include working with e-mail systems, database administration and directory servers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • In depth knowledge of Unix-based systems required. Strong knowledge of Microsoft-based systems required.
  • Knowledge of networking, routers, firewalls, and distributed computing systems required.
  • Strong Perl/Python and Shell scripting abilities required. Experience with MySQL, MSSQL and PHP preferred. Java experience is helpful. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects.
  • Effective verbal communication skills are required to work with management, vendors, and various medical System personnel. 
  • Effective writing skills are required in order to document work performed.
