What You Will Do:

University of Maryland Medical Center is currently seeking a Domestic Violence Intervention Specialist to join our Violence Prevention Program .

This is an On-Call position - 1 full week per month is expected  (M - F: 5 pm - 5 am & Sa - Sun: 24 hour)


Under general direction of the Clinical Supervisor and Full-Time Domestic Violence Intervention Specialist, the Domestic Violence On-Call Interventionist Specialist is responsible for providing direct support, and advocacy for victims of domestic violence during the evenings, nights and weekends that have been identified by the Emergency Department and Shock Trauma’s TRU as victims of domestic violence. Intervene with patients, providing assistance in safety planning, danger assessment, advocacy, resource linkage and emotional support to victims of domestic violence who are treated here at R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center or University of Maryland Medical Center Emergency Department.

  1. Responsible for weekend/after hour/holiday on-call shift coverage as determined by the VPP Clinical Supervisor. Documentation in the patient’s medical record and completes all other necessary documentation. Ensures phone is charged and on at all hours of shift. Responds to the ED or TRU within 1-hour of being requested
  2. Provides crisis counseling including lethality assessment, safety planning, education about legal options and referrals’ to local resources, as well as providing the patient with take home packet if safe.  Assists with shelter as needed.
  3. Works cooperatively and professionally with hospital staff and displays an understanding of and performs all duties in accordance with the Hospital’s Mission and Policies.  Communicates both verbally and through documentation with staff regarding the intervention, outcome and resources provided.
  4. Able to operate and use digital camera and follow departmental policy Photo-Documentation.



What You Need to Be Successful:

  1. Bachelors Required in Social Work/ Social Science/ Human Service related field. May substitute suitable 2 years’ work experience with victims of domestic violence.
  2. Preferred: Masters in Social Work or health-related field.
  3. Experience working in an acute hospital setting.
