What You Will Do:


Primarily responsible for processing all surgical and cytological specimens according to the pathologist's specifications.  Also responsible for maintaining the section according to regulatory agencies requirements.


  1. Logs in all surgical and cytological specimens.

  2. Processes surgical specimens through various stages to completion.

  3. Processes cytological specimens through various stages to completion.

  4. Prepares different stains and performs special stains on tissues.

  5. Assists in frozen section preparation.

  6. Assists in bronchoscopies and fine needle aspirations.

  7. Performs all quality control and instrument checks and maintains adequate records. Initiates corrective action when necessary.

  8. Orders supplies for area without overstocking.

  9. Orients and trains new employees in the section.

  10. Participates in continuing education activities.

  11. Maintains workflow in area based on volume.

  12. Follows universal precautions and Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan.

  13. Communicates in an effective and professional manner demonstrating respect for other health team members.

  14. Complies with all hospital rules and regulations.

  15. Strives to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Manual.

  16. Responds to the following Shore Health System codes: Code Red (in the immediate area), Code Pink (when called), Code D (when called).

  17. Responsible for honest behavior in all matters.  To the best of the employee’s knowledge and understanding, complies with all Federal and State laws and regulations.

  18. Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information. Uses and discloses only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.

  19. Performs related duties as assigned.     



What You Need to Be Successful:


  • A bachelor's degree, or equivalent of two years of college credits.
  • ASCP registered, or equivalent. 
  • Two-years experience preferred.
