What You Will Do:

The University of Maryland Medical Center is seeking a Histocompatibility Specialist in the Laboratories of Pathology HLA / Immunogenetics!

The University of Maryland Medical Center’s (UMMC) Division of Transplantation has a reputation for compassionate care, innovative techniques and surgical excellence.  The UMMC HLA / Immunogenetics Laboratory is the provider of histocompatibility testing for UMMC kidney, pancreas, liver, heart, lung and stem cell transplant programs.  As one of the busiest transplant centers in the country, and the largest program in Maryland, our team of transplant surgeons perform more than 450 solid organ transplants each year. 

The Histocompatibility Specialist will work under the umbrella of regulatory compliance to assure efficient, effective and high quality work.  As a technical resource, the Histocompatibility Specialist will manage and instruct the HLA / Immunogenetics team to perform accurate laboratory testing procedures on serum, blood and tissue, to contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, and care of UMMC patients.  A qualified candidate will be able to perform high complexity HLA testing including determination of antibody specificity, DNA-based molecular typing (SSOP and NGS), and flow cytometric crossmatching for the evaluation of solid organ and stem cell transplant patients and their prospective donors.  The specialist will participate in rotating on-call administrative duties for urgent deceased donor compatibility testing for the solid organ transplant programs. As a vital member of the HLA / Immunogenetics Laboratory, the Histocompatibility Specialist must be able to perform the following tasks:  maintain supply inventories; perform preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment; act as a technical resource for the local deceased donor organ procurement organization; and perform supervisory functions as delegated by the supervisor/manager.

What You Need to Be Successful:

Highly effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary in order to perform your daily tasks efficiently.  The Histocompatibility Specialist position requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.  The successful candidate must be able to work in a highly technical, precise environment.  A strong initiative and supervisory skills are highly desired and are a requirement to succeed in the laboratory.  A Histocompatibility  Specialist must be able to develop project timelines and associated milestones, perform mathematical and statistical operations for recording and evaluating test results.      

Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Biological Science, Chemistry, or other related field with a course in genetics and immunology preferred.  A minimum of five years of experience in histocompatibility testing, and an American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) certification is required.
