The Histocompatibility Specialist will work under the umbrella of regulatory compliance to assure efficient, effective and high quality work. As a technical resource, the Histocompatibility Specialist will manage and instruct the HLA / Immunogenetics team to perform accurate laboratory testing procedures on serum, blood and tissue, to contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, and care of UMMC patients. A qualified candidate will be able to perform high complexity HLA testing including determination of antibody specificity, DNA-based molecular typing (SSOP and NGS), and flow cytometric crossmatching for the evaluation of solid organ and stem cell transplant patients and their prospective donors. The specialist will participate in rotating on-call administrative duties for urgent deceased donor compatibility testing for the solid organ transplant programs. As a vital member of the HLA / Immunogenetics Laboratory, the Histocompatibility Specialist must be able to perform the following tasks: maintain supply inventories; perform preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment; act as a technical resource for the local deceased donor organ procurement organization; and perform supervisory functions as delegated by the supervisor/manager.

The successful candidate must be able to work in a highly technical, precise environment. A strong initiative and supervisory skills are highly desired and are a requirement to succeed in the laboratory. A Histocompatibility Specialist must be able to develop project timelines and associated milestones, perform mathematical and statistical operations for recording and evaluating test results.
Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Biological Science, Chemistry, or other related field with a course in genetics and immunology preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in histocompatibility testing, and an American Society of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) certification is required.
