What You Will Do:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

 

  1. Collects and handles laboratory specimens daily within required time frame from inpatients and outpatients utilizing established hospital procedures to include the following:
  2. Interacts with patients to assure confidence in procedure and to explain procedure.  Projects a positive image of the department.
  3. Conducts proper identification of patients before obtaining blood samples.
  4. Inspects and evaluates collection sites for suitability.
  5. Complies with standard precautions and Blood borne Pathogens exposure Control Plan procedures daily, utilizing proper protective equipment as necessary.
  6. Determines the appropriate method by which to obtain accurate blood specimen via venipuncture or skin puncture.
  7. Observes and responds to patient's adverse reactions from having blood drawn.
  8. Maintains the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test to be performed.
  9. Places blood in the appropriately color coded stopper tubes.
  10. Collects appropriate specimens from inpatients and outpatients in a timely manner.
  11. Responds to STATS in a timely manner.
  12. Labels specimens correctly according to hospital standards.
  13. Records information pertinent to collection.
  14. Disposes of used equipment in the proper manner.
  15. Sorts and delivers specimens within a timely manner to appropriate laboratory sections.
  16. Performs blood culture procedure utilizing established aseptic technique.
  17. Obtains timed specimens within 15 minutes of requested time.
  18. Performs therapeutic phlebotomies according to procedure.
  19. Interacts and communicates in an effective and professional manner demonstrating respect for patients, their families and other health care professionals.
  20. Maintains phlebotomy equipment and area in a neat, clean and orderly fashion.  Stocks supplies and phlebotomy tray.
  21. Monitors phlebotomy supplies and inventory weekly.  Orders supplies as needed.
  22. Projects an image of professionalism in appearance and conduct at all times.
  23. Completes continuing education requirements.
  24. Assists in training new phlebotomists and interns.
  25. Maintains a knowledge of the laboratory information system as it relates to ordering and accessioning.
  26. Obtains other special collection specimens such as insurance physicals, paternity testing, alcohol, etc.
  27. Complies with all hospital rules and regulations.
  28. Performs accurate and complete entry of registration information in a timely manner.
  29. Orders lab tests appropriately.
  30. Strives to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Manual.
  31. Answers the telephone by the third ring using proper phone etiquette, takes and conveys complete messages.
  32. Assures correct ICD-9 code in accordance with physician submitted diagnoses coding to meet reimbursement requirements on all courier work.
  33. (DGH) Notifies patient and/or physician when problems arise from sample collection or processing error per policy.
  34. (DGH) Faxes results to appropriate facilities and physicians offices.
  35. (DGH) Fills supply requests from facility and physician offices.
  36. Responds to the following Shore Health System codes:  Code D, Code Pink, Code Red (in the immediate area).
  37. Responsible for honest behavior in all matters.  To the best of the employee’s knowledge and understanding, complies with all Federal and State Laws and Regulations.
  38. Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.  Uses and discloses only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.
  39. Performs related duties as assigned.

 



What You Need to Be Successful:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Certification by a nationally accredited agency preferred.
  • Three months recent clinical phlebotomy experience preferred, but will consider new graduate.
