What You Will Do:

Performs independently various laboratory tests, routine and specialized, in all areas assigned. These areas may include Phlebotomy, processing, blood bank, microbiology, immunology, chemistry and hematology. Demonstrates an in depth understanding of basic and complex principles in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Participates in the development and testing of new procedures. May resolve identified problems and formulates and implements strategies for resolving complex problems. Maintains instruments; oversees technical operation of the section. Performs quality control procedures for the section. May assist with and/or participate in the updating and revision of procedures for review and approval by clinical specialist or lab manager. Assists in the maintenance of supplies and reagents, undertakes special projects, instruct students and other employees in theory and technique of basic and special procedures. Functions as a supervisor in the absence of clinical specialist or lab manager.

  1. Draw blood from patient by venipuncture or finger (heel) stick as may be required, observing strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis to prevent infection of patient and contamination of specimens.  Follows Universal Precautions and Blood borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan policies.*
  2. Performs clinical assays in all assigned areas daily in a self directed manner to include the following:*
  3. Determines acceptability of specimens-including collection, identification, transport and storage.

    2. Judges appropriateness of test order.
    3. Processes and separates specimens according to established protocol to ensure the quality of specimens before testing.
    4. Performs testing adhering to safety policies and procedures, verifies abnormal results, reviews test results and ensures that test results are accurate prior to release.
    5. Performs testing procedures using automated, semi-automated, manual and optical analyzers familiar to the functional sections of the laboratory.
    6. Completes tests to meet all standards and designated turn around times.
    7. Performs quality control, calibrations, instrument checks and assigned maintenance duties as required.
    8. Records necessary statistical information as needed.
    9. Correlates instrument data with computer entry and accurately reports results in the computer system.
    10. Understands basic principles of lab information system and maintains competency.
    11. May teach new employees and students in different areas of the laboratory.
    12. Performs troubleshooting on equipment.  Reports any problems to the appropriate person (clinical specialist or lab manager).

  8. Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.  Uses and discloses only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.
  9. Performs other duties as needed or assigned.


What You Need to Be Successful:

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in medical technology, or related science. 
  • Medical Technologist (MT)
  • (ASCP) registry/equivalent, or registry eligible. 
  • One-year experience preferred.
  • MLT w/Associates degree also acceptable
