What You Will Do:

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of an RN, assists in the delivery of age specific patient care, assists patients with activities of daily living, and provides basic nursing care.  Maintains a safe and clean environment and promotes the efficiency of the nursing team.  Supports direct patient care activities by performing clerical and receptionist functions and communicates with all persons involved in unit operations. Is actively involved in the therapeutic milieu and treatment planning.  Supports System and Nursing Strategic Plans, Relationship-Based Care, and Shared Leadership.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

  1. Receives report on patients and completes patient care assignments within the time frame designated by the RN.  Duties include:

    1. Observing, reporting, and recording patient behaviors and interactive dynamics.

    2. Obtaining vital signs.

    3. Assisting with delivery of physical care and hygiene as needed.

    4. Interacting therapeutically with patients.

    5. Actively participating in the therapeutic milieu.

  2. Is observant of patients' condition and communicates observations to the RN or team leader.

  3. Performs clerical duties which include but are not limited to:

    1. accurate, legible transcription

    2. copying and filing

    3. chart assemble and breakdown

    4. telephone etiquette and technical skills

    5. scheduling of diagnostic tests

  4. Initiates, updates, and/or maintains authorized records.

  5. Assists in orienting and precepting staff as directed.

  6. Functions cooperatively as a team member.  Responds as directed by responsible RN to changing patients'/unit's needs.  During a patient or environmental emergency, may serve as a runner or transport patients.

  7. Offers support and feedback to peers and staff.  Applies principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients and families and with colleagues.

  8. Performs clerical duties as needed and assigned.

  9. Ensures accuracy in the medication process, including transport, storage, security, and/or administration of medications to include IV solutions.

  10. Maintains an orderly work environment by minimizing clutter/noise in the nurses’ station, assisting physicians and other health care team members with charts and performing light cleaning duties.

  11. Monitors requisitions and stocks supplies to maintain unit PAR levels.  Reports problems to unit manager in a timely manner.

  12. Answers telephones and intercoms; receives and conveys messages; places calls, as requested.

  13. Seeks and supports opportunities for professional growth and development.

  14. Serves as coach and mentor for less experienced colleagues.

  15. Offers consistent and visible support to team members.

  16. Complies with all hospital rules, regulations, and nursing standards.

  17. Communicates in a professional manner and demonstrates respect for patients, families, significant others, and other health care members.

  18. Strives to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Manual.

  19. Responds to the following Shore Health System codes: Code Red (in the immediate area), Code Pink (when called), Code Yellow (when called), Code Green (if instructed), and Code Blue (if instructed).

  20. Responsible for honest behavior in all matters.  To the best of the employee’s knowledge and understanding, complies with all Federal and State laws and regulations.

  21. Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information.  Uses and discloses only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.

  22. Ensures accuracy in the medication process, including, transport, storage and security of medications to include IV solutions.

  23. Performs related duties as assigned.


What You Need to Be Successful:

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:

  • High school graduate or equivalent. 
  • Successful completion of Nursing Assistant training program.
  • Meets requirements to practice as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the State of Maryland.
  • Must successfully complete Unit Secretary Course and Nursing Tech Course offered by SHS. 
  • At least 1 year of experience in an ICU or Emergency Room as a Nursing Tech or Unit Secretary.
