What You Will Do:

University Of Maryland Medical Center is currenlty seeking a Chaplain Associate (as needed) to join our Hospital; located downtown Baltimore, MD. 

Job Summary:

Under general supervision serves the spiritual, religious and emotional needs of patients, families and employees.
  1. Provides pastoral care for patients, families/friends, and employees of theMedicalCenterin accordance with departmental procedures and accepted pastoral practices.
    • Provides pastoral care to patients, families and staff including those in the CancerCenter and ShockTraumaCenter, but excluding the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behavior (unless incumbent has had training in a psychiatric facility or an emergency situation warrants a time-sensitive pastoral care intervention). 
    • Responds to requests for pastoral care to patients, families/friends and/or staff by pagers, intake/triage power chart assessment, phone, and verbal referrals. .
    • Carries three pagers: HOLY, TRU Admitting, and ARREST pagers.  Responds to HOLY and ARREST pages immediately.  Monitors TRU Admitting pager and responds in a timely fashion depending upon acuity and volume of admissions.
    • Provides proactive pastoral care and high visibility of service by rounding on each unit during his/her shift as time allows.
    • Rounds in visitor areas and waiting areas and introduces self and pastoral care services to families and friends in these areas.
    • Documents pastoral interventions according to established departmental and medical center policies and procedures. 
    • Follow established procedures for hand-off communication at shift change.
    • Provides worship services and administers Sacraments as allowed by his/her ecclesiastical body and level of ministerial rank and/or as assigned by the Pastoral Care Services Director, and/or as dictated by emergent nature of MedicalCenter and policies and procedures of Pastoral Care Services.
  2. Serve as an advisor on spiritual and religious issues pertinent to immediate patient care as required.
  • Attends patient care meetings or MedicalCenter committee meetings  on a temporary basis, as assigned by the Pastoral Care Services Directons
  1. Serve as an advisor on appropriate religious matters of concern to his/her own specific faith tradition
  2. Consults with professional staff members on patient and/or family needs and problems including recommending referrals to outside resources for follow-up care in accordance with departmental procedures.
  3. Provides consultation with community clergy concerning their parishioners admitted as patients, in accordance with HIPPA and with the patient or family’s expressed permission and assists clergy in problem resolution within the MedicalCenter.
  4. Receives supervision from Director of Pastoral Care or designee.  Reports any concerns occurring during shift to the Director and based on their best assessment of the concern, does so in a timely manner appropriate and consistent to the level of urgency.
  5. Observes established Medical System policies, procedures, objectives, safety, environmental and infection control standards.


What You Need to Be Successful:

  1. Master’s Degree in Divinity, or a related theological field, from an accredited college, university or seminary is required.  Official transcript that all course work has been completed and Masters degree will be awarded at the next regularly scheduled graduation is acceptable for graduating seminarians. 
  2. Ordination or Rostering, current approval for ordination or rostering, candidacy for ordination or rostering or denominational endorsement by his/her respective faith tradition is required.
at least 3 units of Clinical Pastoral Education from an accredited ACPE (Association for Clinical Pastoral Education) center is required.
