Under the supervision of an RN, assists in the delivery of age specific patient care, assists patients with activities of daily living, and provides basic nursing care. Maintains a safe and clean environment and promotes the efficiency of the nursing team. Is actively involved in the therapeutic milieu and treatment planning.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
Receives report on patients and completes patient care assignments within the time frame designated by the RN. Duties include:
Observing, reporting, and recording patient behaviors and interactive dynamics.
Obtaining vital signs.
Assisting with delivery of physical care and hygiene as needed.
Interacting therapeutically with patients.
Actively participating in the therapeutic milieu.
Is observant of patients' condition and communicates observations to the RN or team leader.
Orders, stocks and maintains equipment and supplies in specific departments.
Utilizes cost control measures, i.e.: conservative use of supplies and accurate charging systems.
Clerical duties as assigned by unit management.
Answer telephones, intercoms, taking and conveying messages appropriately. Placing calls as directed.
Performs or prepares procedures; Obtains supplies and equipment.
Assists in orienting and precepting staff as directed.
Functions cooperatively as a team member. Responds as directed by responsible RN to changing patients'/unit's needs. During a patient or environmental emergency, may serve as a runner or transport patients.
Accurately and legibly records data collected and notifies RN of any untoward events, i.e., behavioral changes, violent behavior, etc.
Makes patient rounds, providing for patient comfort, safety, and satisfaction. Maintains patient environment in a safe and orderly manner.
Complies with all hospital rules, regulations, and nursing standards.
Attends educational activities which promote delivery of patient care.
Communicates in a professional manner and demonstrates respect for patients, families, significant others, and other health care members.
Identifies own educational needs and participates in educational activities which contribute to professional growth.
Participates in the development of annual goals.
Strives to achieve excellence of service as described in the CARE Manual.
Responds to the following Shore Health System codes: Code Red (in the immediate area), Code Pink (when called), Code D (when called), Code Green (if instructed), and Code Blue (if instructed).

MINIMUM EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED:
High school graduate or equivalent. Successful completion of Nursing Technician Training Course, documented evidence of comparable training and experience, e.g. Military Corpsman, senior student in an accredited school of nursing or graduate from an approved school of nursing with unsuccessful completion of the NCLEX Exam. Successful completion of Nursing Assistant training program. Certified as Nursing Assistant by Maryland Board of Nursing.The employee in this position must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the age of the patients served. He/she must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status, to interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/here age-specific needs, and to provide the necessary care as described in the department's policies and procedures.
